The USDM way: Break the Network Infrastructure behemoth down to smaller component services:

The USDM Network Qualification team's approach to Network Infrastructure Qualification is a simple yet comprehensive approach to the problem.

First we break the network down to logical list of services, e.g. Storage and Backup Services (e.g. SAN; NAS; Enterprise Backup and Recovery Systems); Networking Services (e.g. WINS, DHCP, DNS, VPN); Firewall (e.g.. internal, perimeter); Directory Services (e.g. LDAP, Active Directory); Data Management Services etc.

Then, we attack each service as a separate component and qualify one service at a time.  The documentation for the service typically are:

• Infrastructure Requirements Specifications / Configuration Specification
• Risk Assessment (optional)
• Installation / Operational Qualification
• Operational / Maintenance Procedures
• Trace Matrix  
• Security Procedures
• Deployment Procedures
• Configuration Management Procedures
• Infrastructure Qualification report

Using this methodology, the network qualification effort is a more streamlined, manageable process that can be easily maintained over time.
